A Hen party or hen night is organised by friends in honour of the bride to be and is usually held at nighttime and is only attended by women. It is generally held at least a few days before the wedding so that any effects of over indulgence of alcohol etc will have worn off well before the actual wedding day.

The female attendees usually dress up to signify that their hen do is a private party and that they are celebrating the final few days of singledom of their friend. They usually dress the bride up in a mock veil, L plates, fairy wings or similar to distinguish her as the guest of honour. In America, Hen Parties are called batchelorette parties as they are the female equivalent of American batchelor parties for men. In the UK, the groom to be and his friends have a stag party to complement the womens' hen party.
